Nigerian Businesswoman Denied U.S. Entry After Immigration Officials Checked Her Instagram
A Nigerian businesswoman has gone viral after sharing an emotional video in which she recounted being denied entry into the United States, despite holding a valid visa.
In a tearful video shared on Instagram by @onyxhair_bynellyng, which was recorded aboard her return flight to Nigeria and began trending on social media on Sunday, the woman explained that she had traveled to Texas to attend a trade fair using a B1/B2 visa a category designated for business visits and tourism.
According to her, she was detained for 24 hours upon arrival in the U.S. and subjected to intense questioning by immigration officials.
“I told them I was going to exhibit but I did not know any better because the US has your data and your Instagram page,” she added.
She recounted how U.S. immigration authorities scrutinized her social media activity, including Instagram posts and private messages with customers, using the content to dispute her stated purpose for the trip.
“Apparently, my Instagram says different. They even checked all my messages with my customers. The customers I have been telling that we are coming, they can pick up and all of that,” she said through tears.
The incident has sparked conversation online about the increasing role of digital footprints particularly social media accounts in immigration processes, with many urging travelers to be more aware of how their online presence may be interpreted by border authorities.
As of now, U.S. immigration officials have not issued a public statement regarding the incident.
