Oborevwori Inspects Site as Delta Prepares to Host 300 Army Troops
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has declared that the establishment of an Air Defence Regiment under the newly created 83 Division of the Nigerian Army will significantly strengthen state security, protect critical national assets, and drive economic growth.
Speaking during an inspection of ongoing works and facilities for the new unit, Governor Oborevwori accompanied by the Chief of Standards and Evaluation, Nigerian Army, Major General Thompson Ugiagbe, and Commander of 63 Brigade, Brigadier General Ibrahim Buhari, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies.
He highlighted that the 83 Division, covering Delta, Edo, and Bayelsa states, strategically positions the Air Defence unit near the state airport to rapidly counter emerging security threats across the region.
Preparations are in top gear as Delta State has secured a temporary facility for the regiment while arrangements progress for a permanent site. Governor Oborevwori revealed that an initial deployment of 300 to 400 military personnel is scheduled to arrive in the state within the coming weeks.
To ensure seamless deployment, the governor directed the Commissioners for Housing and Lands to immediately carry out technical assessments and structural scoping of the temporary site.
Emphasizing that sustainable development is impossible without robust security, Oborevwori noted that Delta’s evolving security framework has already drastically reduced armed robbery, kidnapping, and violent crimes. He added that the presence of the military formation will further secure vital oil and gas infrastructure, boosting the confidence of residents, corporate investors, and local businesses across the state.
