National Assembly Resumes for One Day, Takes Another Break Till Oct 13

The National Assembly on Tuesday, September 29, reconvened for plenary following a 10-week (68-day) annual recess, only to immediately adjourn sitting again until October 13.
Both the Senate and the House of Representatives had originally suspended proceedings on July 23 for their long vacation. While lawmakers were initially scheduled to return to work on September 15, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, extended the break by two weeks to finalize critical maintenance and sound system upgrades in the main chambers.
Reasons for the Fresh Adjournment
Despite resuming on Tuesday, lawmakers spent just one day in session before pushing further legislative business to mid-October:
- National Security Summit: In the upper chamber, Senate leaders agreed to the brief recess to finalize preparations for an upcoming National Security Summit scheduled for October 12 and 13 in Abuja, aimed at addressing regional security threats and inter-agency collaboration.
- Independence Day Holiday: The fresh adjournment coincides with the Federal Government’s declaration of Thursday, October 1, as a public holiday marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
- Pending Fiscal Bills: The House of Representatives considers pending fiscal policy, sector oversight, and budget-related matters, which will now resume in full on October 13.
