Papi Urhobo, Voice Behind Timaya’s ‘Ogologomma’, Dies After Illness
Stephen Ebihor, popularly known as Papi Urhobo, the Nigerian musician recognised for his distinctive vocals on Timaya’s 2007 hit “Ogologomma,” has died. He died on September 8, 2026, after battling illness.
Urhobo Worldwide, a digital community and cultural platform promoting Urhobo heritage, music, traditions and unity, announced his death in a statement posted on its Instagram page on Tuesday.
The platform appealed to fans, colleagues and members of the public to avoid sharing unverified information, particularly regarding his burial arrangements, until the family makes an official announcement.
“With profound sadness, we acknowledge the passing of our dear brother, friend, colleague, and fellow entertainer, Stephen Ebihor aka Papy Urhobo,” the statement read.
“We kindly appeal to the public, friends, colleagues, and fans to refrain from sharing unverified information or details about his burial arrangements until the family makes its official statement.
“The family will communicate with the public at the appropriate time. We appreciate everyone for the love, prayers, and support, and we urge friends and members of the public to put the wife and children he left behind in prayers at this difficult time. May Papy’s soul rest in perfect peace.”
Papi Urhobo gained wider recognition for his vocal contribution to “Ogologomma,” a track from Timaya’s debut studio album, True Story, released in 2007. His performance became one of the memorable elements of the song and earned him recognition among Nigerian music fans.
Before his death, Ebihor had disclosed that he was involved in an accident that left him with a cracked bone and affected his ability to walk. In a video posted on Instagram on July 29, he appealed for financial assistance to undergo surgery, saying the treatment would help him walk again. He later thanked those who contributed towards his medical care.
His wife also appealed publicly for financial assistance for his treatment as the family sought help with his medical expenses. Despite efforts to support his recovery, the musician died on September 8.
Papi Urhobo, who was also known for incorporating elements of his Urhobo heritage into his music, is survived by his wife and children.
