Super Eagles: Maduka Okoye Handed Two-Month Ban over Illegal Betting
Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been handed a two-month suspension by Italian football authorities after being found guilty of illegal betting.
According to a report by Football Italia on Tuesday, the Nigerian international, who currently plays for Serie A side Udinese, was initially at risk of facing a four-year ban over suspected sporting fraud. However, the disciplinary commission opted for a lesser charge of illegal betting, sparing the 24-year-old a potentially career-ending sanction.
The controversy traces back to a Serie A fixture between Udinese and Lazio on March 11, 2024. In the 64th minute of the match, with Udinese leading 2-1, Okoye was booked for time-wasting, an incident that soon drew the attention of regulators due to unusual betting patterns tied to it.
Investigators discovered that a wave of bets had been placed specifically predicting that Okoye would receive a yellow card. These wagers, reportedly placed at odds of 8/1, originated largely from the Udine area and are believed to have generated over €120,000 in payouts.
Following the incident, Okoye and three individuals linked to him were placed under investigation. The case was formally reviewed by Italy’s disciplinary commission in June 2025. Despite initial fears of a sporting fraud ruling a charge that could carry a four-year suspension, the commission found insufficient evidence to support such a claim and instead ruled on the illegal betting charge.
The two-month suspension will take effect from August 18, 2025, meaning Okoye will miss six Serie A matches, including Udinese’s Coppa Italia tie against Carrarese. He will be eligible for selection again on October 19.
Okoye, who has earned 18 caps for Nigeria, joined Udinese from Watford in 2023 and had been vying to secure a regular starting spot at the club prior to the ruling.
