Doha Submits Official Bid to Host 2036 Olympics
Doha has officially submitted its bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, marking another major sporting event in Qatar’s quest to diversify its energy-dependent economy.
As one of the smallest yet wealthiest Gulf states, Qatar has already successfully hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
If chosen, Doha would make history as the first city in the Middle East and North Africa to host the Olympics, according to Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani.
“The official bid submitted by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games represents a new milestone in Qatar’s journey,” he said in a statement shared on the official Qatar News Agency.
“The bid builds on Qatar’s proven track record of successfully hosting major international sporting events, most notably the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,” Sheikh Mohammed added.
Amnesty International and other rights groups had raised concerns over the 2022 tournament, claiming thousands of migrant workers died in the lead-up.
However, Doha reported only 37 worker fatalities, with just three being work-related accidents.
Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, emphasized that Doha has “made sport a central pillar of our national strategy.”
“We currently have 95 percent of the required sports infrastructure in place to host the Games, and we have a comprehensive national plan to ensure 100 percent readiness of all facilities,” he said.
With the Olympic Games traditionally rotating continents every season, and the 2024, 2028, and 2032 editions set for Europe, North America, and Oceania, Doha’s bid for the 2036 Games has a potential advantage, given the likelihood of the event being hosted in Asia or Africa for the first time.
The selection of the next host city will be one of the first major projects for the International Olympic Committee’s new president, Kirsty Coventry, who last month became the body’s first female leader.
