Infantino Apologises Over Failed $4.2bn World Cup Deal
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a formal apology to the FIFA Council over his controversial, undisclosed plan to sell commercial rights and introduce private investment into major global tournaments. However, the gesture has failed to calm mounting opposition within the world football governing body.
During a tense council meeting at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Infantino addressed member representatives regarding the scrapped multi-billion-dollar deal, admitting to errors in procedural transparency. The secret proposal which aimed to bring external private equity into FIFA competitions, was abandoned following fierce resistance from European confederation UEFA and several member associations.
Despite Infantino’s apology, key football executives insisted that a simple apology is insufficient without full disclosure of the negotiations. Football Association Vice-President Debbie Hewitt publicly challenged the president’s handling of the matter, stating that failure to answer critical questions regarding the deal raises serious questions about his fitness to lead FIFA.
While Infantino continues to face heavy criticism from European football bodies, he maintains substantial backing across member associations in Africa (CAF) and Asia (AFC) as he navigates the leadership crisis.
