BREAKING: Gusau Formally Resigns as NFF President

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau has formally resigned from his position, bringing his tenure as the head of Nigerian football administration to an end.

Gusau announced his resignation during a press conference at the NFF Glass House in Abuja on Thursday, August 27, 2026, amid mounting pressure over the state of Nigerian football.

Explaining his decision, Gusau said he was stepping aside to give other Nigerians the opportunity to contribute to the development of football in the country.

“I just want to tell you that I decided to resign my position as the NFF President. I informed my board members and advised them that anybody who wants to follow me to also resign, but as I am talking to you I cannot tell you who and who or how many board members that have resigned,” he said.

Gusau said he was leaving the federation in a better position than he found it, despite the failure of Nigeria’s men’s and women’s national teams to qualify for their respective upcoming World Cups.

He also pledged to continue contributing to Nigerian football by making his experience and relationships within African football available whenever needed.

“By the grace of God I hope I can continue to give my contributions because the experience and relationship we have within the African football, we will never allow it to go in vain. Whenever we need to give our contributions we will come here and give our contributions for the progress of the Nigerian people.”

The resignation comes amid a broader leadership crisis at the NFF, with several members of the federation’s Executive Committee also reported to have stepped down.

The development follows growing criticism of the NFF over Nigeria’s recent failures on the international stage, including the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The leadership shake-up could also affect preparations for the NFF elective congress scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
