Tyla’s Lagos Concert Must Go On — Sowore
Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has thrown his support behind South African singer Tyla, insisting her Lagos concert should proceed despite calls for a boycott.
In a post shared on his verified X account, Sowore argued that Nigerians should channel their frustrations toward political leaders rather than entertainers.
“Nigerians should direct their anger at their real enemies, the criminal leaders like @officialabat along its @OfficialAPCNg party who destroyed our country, reduced our people to second-class citizens across Africa and the rest of the world and the irresponsible South African leaders like @CyrilRamaphosa whose failures helped create the conditions for xenophobic violence.”
He maintained that artistes should not be blamed for the actions or failures of governments unless there is clear evidence that they supported or enabled such actions.
“No one should hold a talented musician like @Tyllaaaaaaa vicariously liable for the crimes of xenophobia. Artistes are not responsible for the failures of politicians except where there is ample evidence they’re enablers.”
Sowore concluded his statement by expressing support for the singer’s scheduled performance in Nigeria, writing:
“Tyla’s Lagos concert must go on.”
His remarks come amid heated online debates over whether the Grammy-winning South African singer should perform in Lagos following renewed public anger over xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
