Lassa Fever Outbreak: NCDC Confirms 268 Deaths Across Nigeria
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has raised concerns over the spread of Lassa fever, confirming 268 deaths and 1,138 laboratory-confirmed cases across 24 states and 119 local government areas nationwide.
According to the agency’s latest public health update, the case fatality rate has climbed to 23.6 percent, representing a noticeable rise compared to the 18.6 percent reported during the same period last year. Health authorities noted that young adults aged 21 to 30 years remain the most affected demographic in this current outbreak cycle.
Epidemiological data reveals that five states, Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo, and Benue account for a massive 88 percent of all confirmed infections in the country, with Ondo State recording the highest burden at 36 percent.
The NCDC attributed the higher death rate primarily to late arrival at health centers, high costs of care, and low health-seeking habits among rural populations.
Public health officials advise residents across Delta State and Nigeria to store food in sealed containers, maintain strict hygiene to keep rodents out of homes, and report early signs of fever, headache, or body weakness to the nearest hospital immediately.
