DESOPADEC Embarks on De-silting Works in Ashaka to Tackle Flooding
The Member representing the Ndokwa ethnic nationality on the Governing Board of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Dr. Charles Olisa, on Monday, August 11, 2025, inspected the ongoing de-silting of blocked drainage channels in Ashaka, Ndokwa East Local Government Area.
The project, part of DESOPADEC’s proactive flood-control measures, is aimed at mitigating perennial flooding in the area.
Speaking during the inspection, Dr. Olisa noted that the de-silting exercise is being carried out across Delta State in line with the MORE Agenda of Governor Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, which prioritizes making the state flood-free. He commended the leadership of DESOPADEC—Olorogun John Nani (Chairman) and Chief Festus Ochonogor (MD/CEO)—for their commitment to addressing the needs of oil-producing communities.
The works are taking place simultaneously at key flood-prone points in Ashaka, including Hospital Road, Ashaka Market Road, and surrounding areas.
Residents, traders, and workers at the Ashaka General Hospital expressed optimism that the intervention will drastically reduce flooding incidents. The benefits of the project include improved drainage and sanitation, enhanced public health and safety, reduced risk of property damage, and a boost to local economic activity.

This initiative aligns with both the Delta State Government’s MORE Agenda and the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Initiative under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
A meat seller near the de-silted area, Mrs. Augustina Ossai, thanked DESOPADEC for the intervention and pledged to keep the surroundings clean. Ashaka Youth President Comrade Ona Chukwudi also lauded the yearly flood-control works, noting that water now flows freely to the river, easing the community’s worries.
President of the Environmental Health Workers in Delta State, Mr. Oshogba Precious, appealed for the provision of waste bins at strategic points to curb indiscriminate dumping of refuse. He assured that environmental officers would embark on sensitization campaigns and enforce penalties for offenders.
Dr. Olisa was accompanied on the inspection by Comrade Kingsley Iweka, Mr. Monday Akpe (Head of Environment Department, Ndokwa East LGA), Comrade Tom Onah (Youth President, Ashaka Community), and other dignitaries.
