Delta Govt Evacuates 34 Students from University of Jos Amid Plateau Crisis
The Delta State Government has successfully evacuated 34 indigenes studying at the University of Jos following the recent security crisis in Plateau State, assuring them of safety and continued welfare support.
The students were received in Asaba in a coordinated effort approved by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, as part of proactive measures taken to safeguard Delta citizens affected by the unrest, which led to the temporary closure of the institution.
Speaking during the reception, the State Director of Protocol, Sunday Onoriode, commended the swift intervention, describing it as a clear demonstration of responsive and people-oriented governance. He noted that the evacuation was necessitated by the deteriorating security situation and the shutdown of academic activities by the university authorities.
Onoriode expressed relief that all affected students returned home safely, emphasizing that the operation reflects the state government’s commitment to the protection of its citizens, regardless of their location.
“It is an unusual time for Nigeria, especially in that part of the country, but we believe that with God, peace will be restored. When the time comes, you will return and complete your studies successfully,” he assured.
Also speaking, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Students Affairs, Ezekiel Okoh, disclosed that the evacuation followed a directive issued after the university announced a temporary closure due to security concerns.
He explained that the state government, in collaboration with key stakeholders and transport operators, swiftly mobilised logistics to ensure the safe relocation of the students from Jos to Delta State.
According to him, the immediate priority was to secure the students’ safety before facilitating their return home.
A student leader and Vice President of the National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU), University of Jos chapter, Newton Miracle, described the evacuation process as challenging but timely.
“It wasn’t easy moving students under curfew conditions, but we are grateful to the governor for prioritising our safety. This shows leadership that listens and acts,” he said.
The Delta State Government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the welfare and security of Delta students nationwide, urging them to remain law-abiding, resilient, and focused on their academic pursuits despite temporary disruptions.
