U.S Orders Non-Essential Staff, Families to Leave Abuja Embassy, Flags 23 States ‘Do Not Travel’

The United States Department of State has ordered non-essential staff and family members to leave its embassy in Abuja, citing worsening security concerns across Nigeria.

In a travel advisory released Wednesday, the U.S. placed Nigeria under “Level 3: Reconsider Travel,” while designating 23 states as “Level 4: Do Not Travel” zones due to escalating threats.

The advisory, which takes effect from April 8, 2026, warned of rising crime, terrorism, kidnapping, civil unrest, and limited healthcare services across the country.

Newly added states under the highest risk category include Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba, joining others such as Borno, Yobe, Kogi, and parts of Adamawa where security threats remain severe.

Several southern states, including Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers, were also flagged over widespread crime and unrest, although Port Harcourt was excluded from the strictest classification.

The U.S. government warned that violent crimes such as armed robbery, carjacking, and kidnapping for ransom are common, noting that American citizens may be deliberately targeted.

It also cautioned that terrorist attacks could occur without warning in public places, including markets, places of worship, hotels, and large gatherings.

The advisory further highlighted concerns about Nigeria’s healthcare system, stating that medical services are inconsistent and often fall below international standards.

Americans planning to visit Nigeria were advised to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), avoid large gatherings, and adopt strict personal safety measures.
