Delta Emerges Champion at NFA/NSSF Basic Education Sports Competition, to Represent Nigeria at CAF U-15
Delta State has clinched the national title at the Basic Education School Sports Competition, sponsored by the Nigerian Football Association (NFA) and the National School Sport Federation (NSSF), after a thrilling contest in Abuja.
The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Mariere, on Monday received the victorious young athletes in Asaba, where they formally presented the National Championship Cup.
Delta State topped the national competition, held from September 21 to 27, 2025, defeating teams from across the country to emerge champions. According to Hon. Mariere, the players were randomly selected from different schools in Delta, making the victory even more remarkable.
“This success is a reflection of the grace that follows His Excellency, the education-loving Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori. His grace precedes us, and we shall always emerge victorious as we go on to represent Nigeria in the CAF tournament,” Mariere stated.
He further disclosed that Governor Oborevwori has approved the introduction of Basic School Sports Competitions in the state, which will involve schools across all local governments up to the senatorial level, with the grand finals scheduled for Asaba.
The SUBEB Chairman added that the victorious team would now be handed over to the Delta State Sports Commission for grooming and development, stressing that the program would not be limited to football alone but extended to other sports.
Also speaking, the Sports Officer in charge of Basic Education School Sports, Mr. Joshua Akporiaye, revealed that Delta secured the top spot with 13 points, ahead of Ekiti State (10 points) and Enugu State (7 points).
With this historic victory, Delta State will represent Nigeria in the upcoming CAF U-15 Confederation of African Football competition, marking another milestone in the state’s dominance in grassroots sports.
