UNN Bans Night Events After Fatal Stabbing
The Management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has placed a ban on all social activities on its campus that extend beyond 6 p.m.
According to a report from PUNCH, the directive was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Inya Egwu. UNN explained that the decision became necessary after a tragic incident that occurred on September 12.
NAN reports that a businessman identified as Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos, was stabbed to death while attending a bonfire night organized by the students’ association of the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.
The university management stated:
“Henceforth, the UNN management has directed that all such activities must be held strictly during the daytime and under the supervision of the University Security Unit. Social events of any kind will not be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 p.m. henceforth.”
According to the statement, the violent incident occurred after the bonfire event was hijacked by miscreants from a neighbouring community, who instigated unrest.
The management reassured the public of its commitment to safety, noting that:
“UNN remains fully committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all members of its community and would continue to take every necessary measure to prevent a recurrence of such an incident.”
