FIFA Crisis Deepens as Norway Calls for Infantino to Quit
Norway has called on Gianni Infantino to resign as FIFA president, adding to growing pressure on the football governing body’s leadership.
Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) president Lise Klaveness made the call following a meeting of the federation’s board on Thursday, saying Infantino no longer has the trust required to lead FIFA.
Klaveness said Norway believes international football cooperation has become deeply fractured under Infantino’s leadership and that a change at the top is necessary.
The Norwegian federation’s position comes amid controversy over Infantino’s abandoned plan to create a commercial company that would have sold stakes in FIFA World Cup commercial rights. The proposal has faced opposition from several football bodies and intensified criticism of the FIFA president.
Klaveness has also previously criticised other FIFA decisions, including tournament awards and the controversial FIFA Peace Prize, as well as the reversal of a suspension involving Nigeria-eligible player Folarin Balogun following intervention by US President Donald Trump, according to Reuters.
Norway said it would continue pressing for Infantino’s resignation through direct engagement with FIFA rather than seeking an extraordinary UEFA board meeting.
The latest development adds to a widening leadership dispute at FIFA, with other football authorities also voicing opposition to Infantino’s recent initiatives, while some federations have publicly backed him.
