Nigerians React to Oyedepo’s Sermon Against Sports Betting

Bishop David Oyedepo’s recent sermon discouraging sports betting has generated mixed reactions on social media, with Nigerians divided over his message.

While many users applauded the founder of Living Faith Church for speaking against gambling, others argued that betting is a personal choice influenced by Nigeria’s economic realities.

Some commenters shared personal experiences, saying betting had negatively affected their lives. One user, @the_vale01, wrote:

“Betting really wan spoil my life… but thank God I met Him.”

Another user, @ogundeleogd, supported Oyedepo’s position, warning against online betting games.

“Thank you for saying this sir. Especially those ‘flew away’ games, na one-way ticket Abolongo medical centre.”

Others, however, questioned the timing and focus of the sermon, pointing to unemployment and hardship as reasons many young Nigerians turn to betting.

“How many jobs did he provide for the youths? Sport betting is not by force. If u dint lik it move on with ur life…” @Francisdennis65 commented.

Another user, @rafdeephotos, compared betting with the practice of paying tithes, sparking further debate over religious teachings and financial expectations.

Humour also featured prominently in the conversation. @BabsTola joked:

“They say make we no play bet again, how I wan take pay offering.”

Meanwhile, @Mememoid argued that gambling should never be viewed as a source of income.

“Gambling should be entertainment, not a financial plan. Because if betting made people rich consistently, betting companies wouldn’t be the ones making billions.”

The reactions highlight the broader conversation around gambling, youth unemployment, financial pressure and the role of religious leaders in addressing social issues, with opinions remaining sharply divided.
