NAFDAC Orders Recall of Sachet Alcohol, Warns of Business Closure
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ordered manufacturers to recall and destroy alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET/plastic bottles below 200ml.
The directive is part of the agency’s enforcement of the ban on the affected products, which took effect on January 1, 2026. NAFDAC said the recalled products must be inventoried and destroyed under its supervision, with manufacturers bearing the cost of the exercise.
The agency also directed affected manufacturers to dismantle, permanently disable or reconfigure production lines used to produce the prohibited pack sizes before their facilities can be reopened.
NAFDAC warned that businesses that fail to comply could face continued closure, product registration suspension or revocation, regulatory watchlisting and other legal sanctions.
Enforcement will also cover markets, motor parks, retail outlets, bars and distribution centres as NAFDAC intensifies nationwide efforts to remove the prohibited products from circulation.
The agency said the measure is aimed at protecting public health and reducing access to high-alcohol-content products, particularly among young people.
