NAFDAC Confirms Nestlé Infant Formula Sold in Nigeria Is Safe
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reassured Nigerians that all Nestlé infant formula products approved for sale in the country are safe, following a recent voluntary recall of some formula batches in the United Kingdom.
According to NAFDAC, the recall in the UK, which involves SMA Infant Formula and SMA Follow-On Formula, does not include Nigeria. The recalled UK batches were precautionary, due to the potential presence of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus, which can cause nausea and vomiting.
“NAFDAC confirms that the recalled UK batches were not registered by the agency and are not authorised for distribution in Nigeria,” the agency said.
All Nestlé infant formula products sold in Nigeria, including SMA and NAN ranges, are manufactured at Nestlé’s Tuas Factory in Singapore and are duly registered with NAFDAC. Registered products include:
- SMA GOLD 1 – NAFDAC Reg. No. B1-2783
- SMA GOLD 2 – NAFDAC Reg. No. B1-2780
- SMA GOLD 3 – NAFDAC Reg. No. B1-2781
The agency emphasised that these products are not affected by the UK recall.
NAFDAC further advised the public to rely on verified information from the agency, avoid unauthorised imports or online purchases of unregistered infant formula, and report any suspected sale of recalled products. Adverse events can be reported via NAFDAC’s e-reporting platforms, or by calling 0800-162-3322.
The agency reiterated its commitment to public safety through strict product registration, routine surveillance, and post-market monitoring of infant nutrition products.
