Pope Leo XIV Hospitalised for Lung Surgery
Pope Leo XIV has arrived at the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome to undergo surgery to remove a small, localized nodule discovered in his lung. This marks the 71-year-old pontiff’s first hospitalization since his election as head of the Catholic Church in May 2025.
The Pope first revealed the medical news to thousands of gathered faithful during his Sunday Angelus address at St. Peter’s Square. He explained that doctors detected the tissue growth at a very early stage during recent routine health checks and recommended surgical removal as a precautionary measure.
Vatican authorities confirmed that all papal audiences and public engagements have been temporarily suspended until October 20 to allow the leader time to rest and fully recover. The procedure is considered low risk, and medical specialists expect the Pope to remain under observation at the hospital for about a week.
Christian leaders and well-wishers worldwide, including members of the global Catholic community, have sent messages of support and prayers for the Pope’s speedy recovery following his admission. Vatican officials assured the public that updates on his condition will be shared regularly as he begins his post-surgery care.
