Impeaching Fubara Won’t Spark Chaos, Says Wike

Former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has stated that impeaching Governor Siminalayi Fubara won’t have drastic consequences.

Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), made this statement at a media parley in Abuja on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

The Former Governor argued that if Fubara has committed impeachable offenses, such as withholding lawmakers’ salaries for months, then he should face the consequences.

“If you have committed an offence to be impeached, what’s wrong? Is it a criminal offence? It’s provided in the constitution,” Wike said.

He further emphasized that the impeachment process is constitutional and shouldn’t spark fears of chaos. “I have heard people say: ‘Oh, if they impeach him, there will be a breakdown of law and order’. Rubbish! Nothing will happen.”

Wike also criticized Fubara’s letter to the lawmakers, saying he should have done better. Additionally, he noted that the Amaewhule-led House could have gone on a six-month recess after the Supreme Court judgment if they hadn’t been disposed to peace.

The Supreme Court had previously dismissed Fubara’s cross-appeal challenging the validity of the House of Assembly presided over by Amaewhule as the Speaker. The court ordered Amaewhule to resume sitting immediately and barred the release of funds to the Rivers State government until its House of Assembly setup aligns with the Nigerian Constitution.
