Tinubu Saves Fubara from Impeachment Again

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has intervened to halt impeachment proceedings against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, ordering a suspension of any move to remove the governor and pushing for de-escalation between feuding political actors.

The directive came just before Tinubu departed on an official trip to Türkiye, where sources say he insisted all impeachment actions be stopped immediately to preserve governance and stability in Nigeria’s oil-rich state. He emphasised that prolonged political conflict would undermine public confidence and development.

This intervention follows months of intense political tension and repeated failed peace efforts between Governor Fubara and his predecessor and political heavyweight, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The ongoing rift had fuelled impeachment motions in the Rivers State House of Assembly and threatened to plunge the state into legislative paralysis.

Tinubu reportedly directed that any impeachment moves be suspended and urged both sides to refocus on governance, while insisting that senior figures like Wike be treated with respect within party structures.

Earlier in the crisis, a state court had temporarily halted impeachment proceedings, reflecting the legal and political complexity of the stand-off.

Reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape have been mixed, with some welcoming the presidential push for peace, while others argue that legislative processes should be respected.
