BREAKING: Rivers Assembly Advances Fubara Impeachment
The Rivers State House of Assembly has reiterated its determination to continue impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, despite growing political tensions and mixed reactions from lawmakers and stakeholders.
Lawmakers, speaking at a live press conference in Port Harcourt, accused Governor Fubara of blackmail and breaching the 1999 Constitution, leaving the legislature with no option but to pursue constitutional impeachment.
Last week, the Assembly transmitted formal notices of gross misconduct to both the governor and his deputy, alleging actions including the demolition of the state Assembly complex, unauthorized expenditures and failure to present the 2026 budget for legislative consideration.
Assembly spokesperson Enemi George stressed that the impeachment move is driven by constitutional concerns, rejecting calls for political compromise. “We’ve had one too many political solutions,” he said, adding that the legislature is acting strictly on legal grounds.
However, the impeachment momentum has stalled after the lawmakers failed to reconvene last week as previously scheduled, raising questions about the next steps in the ongoing power struggle.
The impasse has also triggered calls from some Assembly members to reconsider the impeachment push and seek political solutions. Two lawmakers recently urged colleagues to call off the process, appealing for unity and dialogue.
The crisis has drawn broader reactions across the state: a diaspora professional group condemned the impeachment effort as a destabilising political move, while others have chaired peace committees aimed at reconciling the Assembly and the executive.
As of now, no further sitting has been held, and lawmakers have not announced a new date for resumption of proceedings. The Assembly’s next steps are likely to influence Rivers State’s governance landscape, with tensions still high between legislative and executive branches.
