2025 UTME: Poor Results Human Error, Not Technical Glitch – Reps
The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies has attributed the issue affecting the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results to human error rather than a technical malfunction.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, the committee chairman, Oboku Oforji, disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that the discrepancies in the results of over 300,000 candidates were due to human mistakes.
“We sincerely apologise on behalf of the examination body (JAMB) to all Nigerians,” Oforji stated.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) had released the 2025 UTME results on May 9, revealing that over 78 percent of candidates scored below 200 out of a possible 400 points. Following widespread concern, the House had on May 15 resolved to launch a probe into the situation, initially believed to be a technical fault.
However, speaking alongside fellow committee members, Oforji clarified: “The fault was caused by human error, not a technical issue as claimed by JAMB.” He also expressed sympathy with candidates affected by the error.
“The committee recognises the courage and sincerity of the JAMB registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, for accepting the fault on behalf of his team and apologizing to the parents, candidates, and the nation in general,” Oforji said. “However, these human errors were avoidable because of JAMB’s negligence.”
He praised the determination of Nigerian students, saying: “The committee also appreciates the eagerness and determination of Nigerian students in pursuing their education to improve the future of our country.”
Despite the incident, Oforji commended the examination board’s overall conduct of the 2025 UTME. “JAMB’s consistent process throughout the examination process, from registration to the release of results, is commendable,” he noted.
The committee has called for an “independent and thorough investigation” into the issue and has proposed reforms for the examination body.
