BREAKING: WHO Confirms Hantavirus Case Linked to Cruise Ship
The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed a case of hantavirus linked to a passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship, raising global health attention.
According to WHO, the affected passenger responded to a notification from the ship’s operator and later presented himself at a hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, where he is currently receiving care.
In response to the development, WHO said it is working with relevant countries under the International Health Regulations (IHR) framework to support international contact tracing and monitor individuals who may have been exposed.
The health body confirmed that the virus involved in the outbreak is the Andes hantavirus, identified through collaboration between the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (South Africa) and the Geneva University Hospitals (Switzerland).
WHO also acknowledged the support of Institut Pasteur de Dakar (Senegal) and Argentina’s Administración Nacional de Laboratorios e Institutos de Salud in responding to the situation.
As of May 6, a total of eight cases have been reported, with three confirmed through laboratory testing.
WHO stated that efforts are ongoing to ensure that affected individuals, passengers, and crew receive the necessary information and support to prevent further spread of the disease.
