US Bars Iran from Attending World Cup Draw
The United States has barred an Iranian delegation from entering the country to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, according to the spokesperson of the Iranian Football Federation (FFI), Amir-Mehdi Alawi.
According to VANGUARD, the delegation, which included FFI President Mehdi Taj, Head Coach Amir Ghalenoei, and seven other officials, was denied entry ahead of the draw scheduled for December 5 in Washington.
Alawi confirmed the news to the Iranian daily Shargh, adding that the FFI is now seeking the intervention of FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He said the federation hopes Infantino will lift the ban within two weeks.
The incident has reignited concerns stemming from the existing entry restrictions imposed on Iranian nationals under former US President Donald Trump. These restrictions raise fears that Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup jointly hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico could be jeopardized.
Sports experts believe the national team players and coaching staff will likely avoid visa issues, but officials, journalists, and fans may face challenges. The FFI has therefore urged FIFA to consider scheduling Iran’s group-stage matches in Canada or Mexico instead of the US.
Iran and the United States have not maintained diplomatic ties for more than 45 years, with both countries seen as political adversaries. Still, nearly two million Iranians live in the US, many of whom have faced difficulties with family reunions due to ongoing visa restrictions.
“We hope FIFA will step in to resolve this matter fairly so that Iranian officials and fans can fully participate in the World Cup,” the FFI spokesperson added.
