Presidency Defends Tinubu’s N10 Billion Solar Power Project for Aso Villa

The Presidency has been criticised for approving a N10 billion solar energy project for the State House, but it has defended the decision by citing a notable example.

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a post shared on his official X handle, pointed out that the White House in Washington, D.C. also uses solar power.

“The White House in Washington D.C. uses solar power,” Onanuga wrote, backing up his claim with a video of the American presidential residence’s solar project. He argued that adopting renewable energy for high-level government facilities is a global best practice and reflects a commitment to sustainability.

The proposed solar system aims to provide stable electricity for the President’s residence, administrative offices, and other essential buildings within the State House complex, promoting energy efficiency and long-term cost savings. While some Nigerians see the environmental benefits, others question the project’s price tag amid the country’s economic hardship.
