Oborevwori Supports South Africa Returnees With ₦2m, Monthly Stipends
The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its support for Deltans who returned from South Africa following xenophobic attacks, providing financial assistance, monthly stipends and medical support to help them rebuild their lives.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved a ₦2 million grant for each affected family, alongside monthly stipends of ₦200,000 for individual returnees and ₦300,000 for affected families. The package also includes free medical care.
The returnees recently visited the Commissioner for the Bureau for Special Duties, Hon. Ejiro Terry Etacherure, to appreciate the state government for its intervention.
Etacherure assured them of the government’s continued commitment to their welfare and urged them to take advantage of available opportunities, remain law-abiding and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on behalf of the returnees, delegation coordinator Uzor Okechukwu Michael appealed for a comprehensive reintegration programme covering job placement, agricultural empowerment, healthcare, skills development and other sustainable livelihood opportunities.
He said the additional support would help the returnees move beyond emergency relief and become economically independent within their communities.
The returnees also expressed appreciation to the governor and other government officials for their support, while pledging to remain responsible citizens.
The latest appeal highlights the need to complement the government’s immediate financial assistance with long-term measures that can provide sustainable livelihoods and support the returnees’ full reintegration into Delta State.
