Delta Lawmakers Unanimously Approve State Police Bill
The Delta State House of Assembly has approved the proposed Sixth Alteration Bill to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), granting legal approval for the establishment of State Police Services across the country.
The approval was given during plenary on Tuesday following an official request from the National Assembly seeking state legislatures’ concurrence on the proposed constitutional amendment.
Reading the official communication from the National Assembly, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, explained that the bill aims to establish State Police Services while retaining the Nigeria Police Force as the primary Federal Police Service.
Leading the debate, Leader of the House, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, emphasized that the dual policing framework would empower state governments to establish, fund, and manage local police structures. He noted that localized security setups are vital for swift intervention and effective intelligence gathering at the grassroots level.
Lawmakers voted unanimously in favor of the bill, with 23 members supporting the resolution. Speaker Guwor commended members for their backing, highlighting that improved security will boost investor confidence and support the state government’s M.O.R.E. Agenda.
Following the vote, the Speaker directed the Clerk of the House to transmit the Delta State Assembly’s resolution back to the National Assembly for further legislative action.
