Power Protest: Delta Govt Moves to Tackle Electricity Crisis in Ndokwa Nation

The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the long-standing electricity challenges in Ndokwa Nation, following a peaceful protest by residents demanding urgent action on power supply.

The demonstrators, under the “Light Up Ndokwa Nation” campaign, converged on the gates of Government House Asaba on Wednesday, calling on authorities to facilitate the connection of their communities to the Okpai Independent Power Plant.

Addressing the protesters, Chief of Staff, Government House, Johnson Erijo, commended the peaceful conduct of the group, describing it as a constructive approach that encourages dialogue and government response.

“We appreciate the peaceful way you have expressed your concerns. Be assured that your message has been received, and the government is committed to providing lasting solutions,” he said.

Erijo acknowledged the prolonged electricity shortages affecting Ndokwa communities, noting that the administration of Sheriff Oborevwori is actively working to address technical, regulatory, and operational barriers hindering stable power supply in the area.

He explained that the state government is pursuing a comprehensive strategy under its “Light Up Delta” initiative, aimed at delivering sustainable and decentralized electricity across Delta State.

As part of this effort, the Chief of Staff highlighted the recent signing of the Delta State Electricity Commission Bill into law, describing it as a critical step toward establishing a functional framework for power generation, transmission, distribution, and regulation within the state.

According to him, the government has also engaged technical consultants to drive the implementation of the initiative, with a focus on innovative solutions such as public-private partnerships, embedded generation, and collaboration with existing power infrastructure.

“Government will continue to work with all relevant institutions and partners to ensure that the right outcomes are achieved for the benefit of our people,” Erijo added.

He urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that the administration remains committed to inclusive development and equitable distribution of infrastructure across all parts of the state.

The protest, led by Comrade Stanley Ado, drew participants from Ndokwa West, Ndokwa East, and Ukwuani Local Government Areas, once again spotlighting concerns over the lack of electricity in the region despite hosting a major power facility.
