Oborevwori Moves to Boost Power Supply, Targets Okpai Plant Output

The Delta State Government has stepped up efforts to improve electricity supply, with a strategic visit to the Okpai Independent Power Plant (IPP) in Ndokwa East Local Government Area.

The move, directed by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, is part of ongoing plans to harness existing power assets and ensure stable electricity across the state.

Leading the delegation, the Commissioner for Energy, Engr. Michael Anoka, said the visit underscores the administration’s commitment to delivering reliable power through practical solutions.

He disclosed that the Okpai IPP currently generates about 480 megawatts, with an additional 450 megawatts expected from the second phase, bringing total capacity to approximately 930 megawatts.

According to him, the state government is working to tap into this capacity to significantly improve electricity supply for residents and businesses.

“The goal is to harness existing power assets to improve supply capacity, in order to provide reliable electricity that will support businesses, drive industrial growth, and enhance the quality of daily life of residents across the state.”

Anoka also revealed that the Ministry of Energy has received proposals from investors willing to support the state’s power expansion plans, following earlier engagements with stakeholders.

He noted that the Governor’s vision is to position Delta among the first states in Nigeria with a fully electrified economy, capable of attracting industries, creating jobs, and boosting economic growth.

“These visits to the various power plants in the state shows that Delta State is moving forward with real action toward stable power supply and a stronger, more industrialized economy, in line with the mandate and vision of His Excellency the Governor.”

The team was received at the facility by Engr. Enebeli Francis, who confirmed the plant’s current output and ongoing expansion efforts.
