Davido Hosts Highlife Legend Bright Chimezie in Lagos After Sampling His Song
Global Afrobeat superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has fulfilled his promise by hosting Nigerian highlife icon Bright Chimezie in Lagos.
The long-anticipated meeting follows Davido’s use of Chimezie’s 2010 hit “Because of English” in his collaboration with Omah Lay titled “With You.”
In a heartwarming moment shared on social media, Chimezie expressed gratitude while dancing to the remix-inspired tune, saying:
“I thank Davido for the sample credit of my song.”
Davido responded with admiration, acknowledging Chimezie’s contribution to the music industry:
“He had long admired Chimezie and hoped to meet him.”
On Monday, the With You singer posted a video on Instagram showing the legendary highlife musician arriving in a luxury car. The clip featured Chimezie being warmly welcomed at what appeared to be a restaurant, where the two artists shared lighthearted moments, chatting, laughing, and singing along to some of Chimezie’s classic hits.
Davido’s verse in With You, “If I speak English, oh-oh, Cho-cho-cho, no working, I no wan punish, woah, woah. I want to punish you, idiarabanko” bears a strong resemblance to the original lyrics by Chimezie, delivering a contemporary twist that many fans interpreted as a respectful homage to the veteran’s unique highlife style.
