Coalition Politics Is Unrealistic, Nigerians Shouldn’t Be Deceived – Akpabio

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has advised Nigerians to be wary of placing their hopes in political coalitions, describing such arrangements as “deceptive” and “unrealistic” within Nigeria’s current electoral structure.

Speaking at the House of Representatives Open Week held in Abuja, Senator Akpabio emphasized that the law recognizes only political parties not individuals or informal coalitions as the legitimate vehicles for contesting elections.

“Nigerians, don’t be deceived. Coalition politics is unrealistic,” he said, arguing that the notion of a person aligning with two political parties at once is not only unconstitutional but misleading.

His comments came in the wake of a high-profile opposition coalition meeting held on Wednesday, July 2, in Abuja, where the group formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its unified platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

During the meeting, former Senate President David Mark was named interim national chairman, while former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola was appointed secretary.

The gathering drew a notable lineup of political figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Dino Melaye, Dele Momodu, Gabriel Suswam, Ireti Kingibe, Emeka Ihedioha, Sadique Abubakar, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Senator Akpabio also used the platform to correct public misconceptions about the role of lawmakers, stating that the primary function of the legislature is to make laws, not to execute infrastructure projects.
