Defection: We’re Expelling Obi – Labour Party Chieftain
Abayomi Arabambi, the factional National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), has revealed that a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting is being planned to formally expel the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over alleged anti-party activities.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, Arabambi accused Obi of violating the party’s constitution by publicly aligning with another political platform, the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“We’re convening a NEC meeting where Peter Obi will be expelled,” Arabambi stated.
He argued that Obi had been placed on suspension before his alleged actions, which he described as a clear breach of party loyalty.
“You know he was on suspension before he went ahead to do the anti-party activities. You don’t go and join a political party, and at the same time still put your leg in another political party. He knows it’s unconstitutional to belong to two political parties at the same time,” he added.
Arabambi accused Obi of instigating internal strife within the Labour Party and questioned his leadership capacity.
“He started the crisis in the Labour Party. He is not fit to lead any political party,” Arabambi alleged.
The controversy follows Obi’s recent endorsement of a coalition-led movement affiliated with the African Democratic Congress, which some LP members interpret as disloyalty.
However, Peter Obi has denied holding dual party membership. In a recent interview, he clarified his position:
“I am not a party member of ADC, but rather a supporter of the movement.”
Obi also reaffirmed his commitment to national leadership and restated his interest in contesting the presidency again.
“I am qualified to lead Nigeria and will contest again in 2027,” he said.
The Labour Party is yet to issue an official statement responding to Arabambi’s claims or confirming the date of the proposed NEC meeting.
