The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, will on Monday, September 29, 2025, preside over the swearing-in of 57 newly elevated legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
According to CHANNELS TV, the development was disclosed in an official statement on Thursday by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Eniola Akanbi, who said the elevation was approved by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC), chaired by the CJN.
Akanbi described the SAN title as one of the most significant honours in the Nigerian legal profession, conferred upon lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional professional distinction, either through courtroom advocacy or academic excellence.
“The rank of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria is conferred as a mark of professional excellence upon legal practitioners who have demonstrated exceptional distinction either as advocates in the courts or as academics contributing significantly to the development of legal scholarship,” the statement read.
He added that three petitions against some applicants were reviewed and dismissed for lacking merit, and that all approved SANs are expected to attend and successfully complete the mandatory Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme, in line with the directives of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN).
Among the newly approved SANs from the Bar are Theophilus Kolawole Esan, Fedude Zimughan, and Ernest Ikeji, while Prof. Chima Ubanyionwu emerged as the sole successful candidate from academia.
