BREAKING: Lagos BRT Driver Sentenced to Death by Hanging for Killing Bamise Ayanwola
A Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, to death by hanging for the murder of 22-year-old fashion designer Oluwabamise Ayanwola.
The Judge Presiding over the suit, Justice Sherifat Sonaike delivered the verdict on FRIDAY, finding the defendant guilty of conspiring, raping, and murdering the victim.
According to a report by BBC, Bamise Ayanwola’s lifeless body was found naked by the roadside in February 2022, after she boarded the BRT bus and failed to reach her destination. The case sparked widespread outrage on social media and led to protests in Lagos, with many demanding justice for the victim.
The defendant had pleaded not guilty to the allegations, but the court found him guilty after proceedings.
The case has been ongoing since 2022, with the family and friends of Bamise Ayanwola expressing frustration over the delay in the trial.
The verdict brings an end to the long-drawn-out process, and the sentence serves as a reminder of the severity of the crime.
