Oborevwori Empowers Warri Fishermen With 50 Boats to Boost Food Security
In a strategic move to boost food security and drive economic growth in coastal communities, Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has distributed 50 motorized fishing boats equipped with 15-horsepower Yamaha outboard engines and nets to local fishermen across Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South-West Local Government Areas.
The tools were officially commissioned and handed over to beneficiaries on Monday, September 14, 2026 at Koko, the administrative headquarters of Warri North Local Government Area.
Representing the governor at the ceremony, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, highlighted the distribution as a practical execution of the state’s M.O.R.E Agenda, designed to ensure riverine areas receive vital economic assets.
“For generations, fishing has been an important part of the life and economy of our riverine communities. It is more than a means of livelihood; it is a tradition passed from one generation to another,” Oborevwori stated. “This intervention is about giving you the tools you need to fish more efficiently, increase your income, and provide better opportunities for your families.”
The governor confirmed that the exercise marks the first batch of a broader state-wide initiative, directing the Ministry of Riverine Infrastructure Development to replicate the program in other coastal LGAs. He also promised ongoing infrastructural support, including landing jetties, access roads, and facilities designed to reduce post-harvest losses.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Riverine Infrastructure Development, Chief Ebikeme Clark, explained that the custom-constructed boats were engineered to withstand heavy tidal conditions and assist both fishing expeditions and farm produce transport.
“Today, we are not just handing over fishing boats; we are handing over tools of livelihood, instruments of peace, and engines of economic growth,” Clark noted, adding that the motorized engines would allow fishermen to venture deeper into waters and reach markets faster.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Stanley Agbosa expressed gratitude to the state government, promising that the equipment would be properly maintained to maximize yields and support food security in the region.
The event was attended by top government officials, including APC State Chairman Chief Solomon Arenyeka, state lawmakers, executive council members, LGA chairmen, traditional rulers, and representatives of local agricultural associations.
