U.S. Customs Renews Warning Against Bushmeat Imports Into United States

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has again warned travelers against bringing bushmeat and other prohibited or restricted items into the United States.

The warning was reiterated in a post shared on the agency’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on June 3, 2026, where CBP reminded international travelers that bushmeat is prohibited and advised passengers to review the restricted items list before returning to the country.

According to CBP, travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the agency’s regulations to avoid confiscation of goods, penalties, or possible legal action at U.S. ports of entry.

The agency explained that it works alongside more than 40 federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to prevent potentially harmful products from entering the United States.

The agency said its officers stationed at ports of entry are responsible for protecting public health, public safety, domestic agriculture, wildlife, and national security by enforcing hundreds of federal laws and regulations.

CBP noted that some products may appear harmless but could pose significant risks to human health, animal populations, plant life, or the nation’s economic interests.

The agency explained that prohibited items are goods that are completely forbidden by law from entering the United States. Examples include bushmeat, dangerous toys, vehicles that do not meet U.S. safety standards, and certain illegal substances.

Restricted items, on the other hand, may be allowed into the country only after obtaining special permits, licenses, or approvals from relevant federal agencies. Such items include firearms, certain fruits and vegetables, animal products and by-products, and some live animals.

Travelers are advised to consult CBP before departure if they are uncertain whether an item they intend to bring back to the United States is permitted.
