Resident Doctors Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Unmet Demands

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced plans to commence a nationwide strike on Monday, August 10, 2026, if the Federal Government fails to address its outstanding welfare and professional demands before the deadline. The decision was reached during the association’s Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) held in Gombe.

In a communiqué jointly signed by NARD President Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, Secretary-General Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, and Publicity and Social Secretary Dr. Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim, the association expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s implementation of previous agreements. NARD warned that the planned action would be a total and comprehensive industrial strike if unresolved issues remain outstanding.

“The National Executive Council resolved to embark on a total and comprehensive industrial strike commencing at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, should the federal government fail to satisfactorily address the outstanding issues.”

Among NARD’s demands are the immediate payment of outstanding arrears from the 25/35 percent CONMESS salary review, 19 months of unpaid professional allowance arrears, salary and promotion arrears, implementation of the Medical and Health Workers’ Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), improved welfare for house officers, payment of omitted beneficiaries under the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), and stronger protection for healthcare workers.

The association also called for urgent intervention in the ongoing crisis at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), citing alleged intimidation of resident doctors and unresolved welfare concerns.

While reaffirming its willingness to continue dialogue, NARD insisted that the welfare of resident doctors and the survival of Nigeria’s healthcare system cannot be compromised. The association warned that failure to resolve the issues before August 10 could disrupt healthcare services across federal tertiary hospitals nationwide.
