Reijnders Reveals Why He Chose Saudi Arabia Over Man City

Tijjani Reijnders has opened up about his decision to leave Manchester City for Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah, admitting that the financial package offered by the club was a major factor in his move.

The Netherlands international, who joined Al Qadsiah from Manchester City this summer, said the salary was difficult to reject because it would allow him to secure the financial future of his family for generations. His comments were reported from an interview with Dutch media, including NOS, and shared by football journalist Fabrizio Romano.

“When you’re offered that kind of salary, just try saying no”.

“Everyone can take the moral high ground saying I’d never do that, but I’m pretty sure most people would accept it. In fact, most people would probably accept a promotion in their own job. It’s money for generations and you can’t reject that”.

Reijnders acknowledged that he was already earning a good salary at Manchester City but said the financial terms of his Al Qadsiah contract were on another level.

“I had a great salary at Man City, of course, but we’re talking about kind of money that is almost impossible to turn down”.

The 28-year-old said his priority was to ensure he would not need to work after his playing career while also creating long-term financial security for his family.

“Once my playing career is over, I don’t want to have to work anymore. Of course, I probably wouldn’t have needed to work anymore after my contract at Man City either, but this move allows me to secure the future of my family next generations”.

“I’m not going to lie about that. By signing this contract, I can make sure even my grandchildren are financially secure, so why wouldn’t I do it?”, Reijnders has honestly admitted.

Reijnders completed his move to Al Qadsiah in August after spending just one season at Manchester City. NOS reported that the transfer fee was around €61 million, while his four-year deal was expected to earn him more than €100 million.

The midfielder joined Manchester City from AC Milan in 2025 and made 50 appearances during his only season at the Premier League club before making the switch to Saudi Arabia.
