Delta Govt, APC Condemn Asaba Political Violence, Demand Thorough Investigation

The Delta State Government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council have condemned the violence that erupted during a Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) political procession along Nnebisi Road, Asaba, on Saturday, November 7, 2026, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

The incident, which occurred during a political mobilisation by supporters of the NDC presidential candidate, has drawn condemnation from the state government and the APC Campaign Council, both of which have called for a thorough investigation and accountability for anyone found responsible.

The Delta State Police Command had earlier confirmed the death of one person and injuries to five others, while announcing that a full-scale investigation had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, the Delta State Government described the violence as unacceptable and reiterated its zero tolerance for political violence, intimidation and other forms of political rascality.

The government said it had repeatedly cautioned political parties against activities capable of disrupting public peace, adding that the incident could have been avoided if the organisers had followed security advice.

According to Aniagwu, the police had advised the organisers to shelve the proposed street march and instead hold their campaign at a designated venue where adequate security arrangements could be provided.

The government expressed concern that the advice was ignored, resulting in a confrontation that claimed a life and left four other persons seriously injured.

It called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible was brought to justice.

Aniagwu further warned that the state government would not tolerate politically motivated attacks against any individual, irrespective of party affiliation.

He maintained that Delta remained a safe place for residents and visitors, stressing that the government would not allow the actions of individuals or groups to undermine the peaceful atmosphere in the state.

The government also urged political parties, their leaders and supporters to conduct their activities within the bounds of the law and respect human life, public order and the rights of other citizens.

APC Campaign Council Condemns NDC Procession Violence

Similarly, the Delta State APC Campaign Council condemned the incident, describing it as regrettable and expressing sadness over the reported loss of life, injuries and destruction of property.

In a separate statement issued by Aniagwu in his capacity as Chairman of the Council’s Media and Publicity Committee, the APC Campaign Council extended its sympathies to the family of the deceased, those injured and others affected by the incident.

“No political ambition or disagreement is worth the life of any citizen, and no political contest should ever degenerate into violence,” the statement said.

The council demanded an impartial investigation, insisting that political disagreements must not result in intimidation, violence or destruction of property.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful, responsible and issue-based political campaigns, recalling that its leadership had made the commitment from the inauguration of the Delta State APC Campaign Council.

According to the council, its campaign philosophy is anchored on presenting its achievements, programmes, vision and policy alternatives to the people of Delta State.

It called on the Delta State Police Command to undertake a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation, identify all individuals involved and establish the circumstances surrounding the violence.

The APC Campaign Council further urged the police to bring anyone found culpable, including alleged sponsors or instigators, to justice, stressing that no individual should be shielded from the consequences of criminal conduct because of political affiliation or influence.

Police Begin Investigation, Appeal for Information

The Delta State Police Command has said it is investigating the incident and assured the public that the process would be thorough and impartial.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, condemned the violence, while reiterating that political parties were free to conduct lawful campaigns but should avoid road processions and liaise with the police ahead of political gatherings.

The command also appealed to members of the public with useful information about the incident to assist the investigation through its designated contact numbers, 09155570008 and 09155570007.

Both the state government and the APC Campaign Council have urged political actors and their supporters to embrace peaceful engagement as political activities continue in the state.
