Xenophobia: Oborevwori to Receive Returning Deltans, Unveil Relief
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, will on Friday formally receive Deltans who returned to Nigeria following the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa and present a state government support package aimed at helping them rebuild their lives.
The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, announcing that the reception will take place at the Unity Hall, Old Government House, Asaba, on Friday, July 31, 2026, by 12:00 noon. Invited guests are expected to be seated by 11:30 a.m.
According to Ahon, the reception forms part of the Delta State Government’s humanitarian response to citizens displaced by the wave of xenophobic violence in South Africa. He said the support package is designed to provide immediate relief and ease the challenges faced by the returnees as they reintegrate into society.
The governor’s spokesman added that the intervention reflects the Oborevwori administration’s commitment to the welfare, safety and well-being of Deltans, regardless of where they reside. He noted that government officials, stakeholders and other invited guests are expected to attend the event in solidarity with the affected citizens.
The reception comes amid renewed concerns over xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, with several Nigerians returning home following the latest incidents.
