LASU Goes on Lockdown as ASUU, SSANU, Others Begin Indefinite Strike
Lagos State University (LASU) has been effectively shut down as all major staff unions commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved disputes with the university management.
The strike was declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of LASU, which includes the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-LASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU-LASU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU-LASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT-LASU).
In a joint letter dated July 31, 2025, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and sighted by our correspondent on Friday, the unions announced the immediate commencement of the strike.
The notice was signed by: Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare (ASUU-LASU Chairman), Dr. Sylvester O. Idowu (ASUU-LASU Secretary), Oluwaseyi Lawal (SSANU-LASU Chairman), Waheed Majekodunmi (SSANU-LASU Secretary).
The statement directed all staff members at LASU’s main campus, the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja, and the Epe campus to withdraw their services and vacate their official duty posts immediately.
“Sequel to the decision reached at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions… we write to notify you that the indefinite strike action has COMMENCED,” the release stated.
“The strike will remain in force indefinitely until all the demands of staff members are met by the appropriate authorities.”
The strike is expected to disrupt academic activities at LASU, as students were scheduled to begin their 2024/2025 second semester examinations next Monday.
