Lagos Airport Parking Fee Hits ₦50,000 Overnight

A sharp increase in parking fees at Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 has sparked public outrage, with overnight charges now rising to ₦50,000.

The revised tariff, which took effect in April, shows that Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) are now billed ₦4,000 for the first hour, while buses pay as much as ₦20,000. Overnight parking has surged to ₦50,000, marking one of the highest airport parking rates in the country.

Sedan cars are also affected, with the first hour now pegged at ₦3,500, while subsequent hours for both sedans and SUVs attract ₦2,500.

The increase, reportedly over 150 percent in some categories, has triggered widespread backlash among passengers and airport users already grappling with high airfares and rising cost of living.

Many travellers described the new charges as excessive and burdensome.

“The same passengers already faced with high travel fares now have to pay more than double to park their vehicles. This is frustrating,” one traveller said.

Social media platforms have also been flooded with reactions, with some users arguing that the new rates make ride-hailing services cheaper than parking at the airport.

Industry observers note that the hike is coming at a time when Nigeria’s aviation sector is already under pressure from rising operational costs, including aviation fuel and foreign exchange challenges.

Operators of the terminal have, however, linked the increase to congestion and operational concerns, stating that long-term parking has reduced space availability for legitimate airport users.

The development has further intensified calls for regulatory intervention, as passengers demand more transparency and consumer-friendly pricing within the aviation sector.
