How Charlie Kirk Suspected Assassin Tyler Robinson Was Caught
Authorities in Utah have explained how Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk, was tracked down and arrested after an intensive manhunt.
According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, Robinson was identified when a family member recognized him from images circulated by investigators. The tip, first reported by Reuters, proved decisive and led to his arrest late Thursday without resistance.
Robinson had been on the run for more than 24 hours after allegedly firing a fatal shot from a rooftop during Kirk’s event at Utah Valley University, law enforcement officials told FOX NEWS.
The FBI Salt Lake City field office confirmed that local, state, and federal agencies launched a large-scale manhunt, deploying drones, tactical units, and canine teams across Utah County.
FOX NEWS had earlier reported that investigators recovered a bolt-action rifle believed to have been used in the shooting, along with bullet casings with unique inscriptions. Surveillance footage also showed Robinson fleeing the scene, according to officials.
Following the arrest of the suspect, Utah Governor Spencer Cox praised law enforcement for the swift arrest, describing it as “a major relief to a shaken state,” in comments carried by Associated Press (AP).
FBI Director Kash Patel told reporters that forensic experts are reviewing both digital and physical evidence to determine Robinson’s motive, while urging the public to remain patient as the investigation unfolds.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, a close ally of Charlie Kirk, reacted on Truth Social, condemning the assassination as “a cowardly and calculated act of political violence.”
According to Reuters, formal charges against Robinson have not yet been filed, though prosecutors are expected to act quickly. Authorities stressed that the investigation is still active, with hundreds of tips under review.
Charlie Kirk, 31, was the founder of Turning Point USA and one of the most prominent conservative voices in American politics. His assassination has sparked outrage nationwide and renewed debates about political extremism and the safety of public figures.
