Trump Orders US Flags Lowered for a Week in Honour of Dolly Parton
US President Donald Trump has ordered American flags to be flown at half-staff across the country in honour of country music legend Dolly Parton, following her death at the age of 80.
The White House said the order covers the White House, public buildings and grounds, military posts, naval stations and federal vessels across the United States and its territories. The flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on September 1, 2026.
Trump paid tribute to Parton, describing her as one of the greatest country singers and saying her death was “a true loss for millions of people.”
“There has never been anyone like her, and never will,” Trump said in his tribute.
Parton died on Tuesday at the age of 80, prompting an outpouring of tributes from fans, musicians, public figures and political leaders in the United States and beyond.
The singer, songwriter and philanthropist was widely recognised for her decades-long career and contributions to music, entertainment and charitable causes, particularly through her Imagination Library literacy programme.
Trump’s decision to lower the national flag adds a significant official tribute to the widespread mourning following the death of one of America’s most celebrated cultural figures.
