Electricity Workers Suspend Nationwide Strike After FG Intervention

Electricity workers in Nigeria have suspended their planned nationwide strike following a last-minute intervention by the Federal Government.

According to a report by VANGUARD, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) had threatened to embark on industrial action over unresolved issues in the power sector. The grievances centered on the non-implementation of the national minimum wage and other operational concerns involving the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The strike was suspended after extensive negotiations between union leaders and representatives of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, alongside officials from the labour ministry.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Abuja on Thursday night, formalizing the resolutions reached.

A copy of the MoU, sighted in Abuja on Friday, revealed that it was signed by representatives of the Ministers of Power and Labour, leaders of the unions, as well as representatives of the TCN and the National Independent System Operator (NISO), who signed on behalf of the Federal Government.

The MoU outlined key resolutions, including:

  • The unions will review the report of a standing committee between October 6 and October 7, with implementation set to begin within the same month.
  • TCN and NISO are to jointly evaluate the financial implications of the report and prepare an implementation plan for presentation to the Minister of Power and the unions.
  • Both unions will reconvene with TCN and NISO management to address additional outstanding issues.
  • The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) will fast-track tariff reviews for TCN and NISO to enable the implementation of the committee’s recommendations.
  • No employee will face victimisation for participating in the industrial action.

Following the agreement, the unions suspended the planned strike, describing the move as a demonstration of good faith and commitment to dialogue.

This development is expected to ease tensions within the electricity sector and reassure Nigerians of an uninterrupted power supply, at least in the immediate term.
