Stop the Use of Unauthorized Government Plate Numbers, Delta Govt Warns Motorists
The Delta State Government has issued a stern warning to motorists using unauthorized government plate numbers, directing immediate compliance or face penalties in accordance with the State Road Traffic Laws and Regulations.
In a Government Special Announcement released by the Ministry of Information, the Directorate of Transport expressed concern over the rising number of private vehicles—including cars, buses, and trucks—bearing government plate numbers without approval.
The government noted that it is illegal for any private vehicle to use government-issued plate numbers and equally unlawful for any vehicle to operate without a clearly visible and identifiable plate number.
The Directorate directed all owners of vehicles currently using unauthorized government plate numbers to remove them immediately. It further instructed motorists whose plate numbers are covered, hidden or obscured without authorization to uncover them at once.
Additionally, vehicle owners without plate numbers have been ordered to install duly registered and visible plate numbers both at the front and rear of their vehicles. Motorists displaying plate numbers only at the back must ensure the front plate is properly affixed in line with road traffic requirements.
To aid compliance, the Directorate of Transport has granted a two-week grace period, effective immediately and ending November 28, 2025.
After the window closes, enforcement will begin, and violators will be sanctioned as prescribed by state traffic laws.
