Delta Govt Denies Political Violence Amid Izeze Assault Claims
The Delta State Government has dismissed claims that the state is experiencing political violence, insisting that the recent disturbance at a political gathering in Effurun was an isolated incident and does not reflect the overall security situation in the state.
Speaking during a press briefing in Asaba, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had directed security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident, identify those responsible and ensure they are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Aniagwu said the government would not speculate or draw conclusions while investigations were ongoing, stressing that the state would allow security agencies to complete their work before making further comments.
“The governor has directed security agencies to investigate both the immediate and remote causes of the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. It would be inappropriate for the government to reach conclusions before investigations are completed. We will allow the security agencies to conclude their work before making further comments,” Aniagwu said.
The commissioner also rejected attempts to link the disturbance to President Bola Tinubu or portray it as evidence of widespread political unrest in Delta State. He explained that the clash resulted from disagreements among political actors at the meeting and should not be misrepresented as a reflection of the state’s security.
Aniagwu confirmed that one of Governor Oborevwori’s protocol officers sustained injuries during the disturbance but declined to comment on reports that the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, was assaulted, noting that the matter remains under investigation. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to maintaining peace, law and order, adding that Delta State remains safe for residents, businesses and investors.
