Beware of Cryptic Pregnancy Scams, Aproko Doctor Warns Nigerian Women

Popular Nigerian health influencer, Dr. Chinonso Egemba, widely known as Aproko Doctor, has raised alarm over a rising trend of fraudulent “cryptic pregnancy” schemes targeting vulnerable women.

In a post shared on his official X handle on September 15, Aproko Doctor warned that anyone claiming a pregnancy cannot be detected by an ultrasound scan is attempting to scam unsuspecting women.

“There’s a pregnancy SCAM going on: Anybody that tells you that another person cannot see the baby in your womb with an ultrasound scan is about to scam you,” he wrote.

According to him, fraudsters deceive women by administering hormones to mimic pregnancy symptoms such as bloating, nausea, and swollen legs, while discouraging them from seeking second opinions or undergoing proper scans. He added that these women are eventually sedated and handed babies often trafficked under the guise of miraculous deliveries.

The warning resurfaced amid controversy over a testimony shared by actress and reality TV star Bambam, who claimed a woman in her church carried a pregnancy for three years and four months before delivering safely.

Similarly, another medical expert, Dr. Olusina Ajidahun (The Bearded Dr. Sina), echoed the warning, reposting his earlier exposé on fraudulent “cryptic pregnancy” practices. He described it as one of the biggest scams in Nigeria’s healthcare system, noting that many women have unknowingly testified about “miracle babies” that were actually stolen.

Investigations by BBC Africa Eye in 2024 also uncovered evidence of these scams, revealing how victims were charged millions, injected with hormones, and deceived with fake scans. Some women were later handed trafficked babies, while others endured years of psychological trauma.

Medical experts are urging Nigerian women to be cautious, seek verified medical advice, and avoid falling prey to miracle claims that exploit desperation.
